Traveling to Hong Kong

Monday, October 26th, 2009

I visited Toronto a few weeks back. I went to the OFE show. I had never been there before. I went to meet my Eastern rep. Unfortunately she is not a good match for Cake. Her other lines were more sportswear than dresses. I will be looking for another rep. She is really nice though. She recognizes that we are not a good fit and she is happy to pass the line back to me. Its a pretty tight market out East. We have done really well with the line in the West, but not well in the East. Its a pretty tight market right now.

I think I am just going to leave it for now. Wait until the right person comes along. There is no point wasting money on reps that don’t work for the line. I think this business success is leaning towards retail anyway.

Right now we are working on opening a second location in St. Vital centre, December 1. In the past I thought I never wanted another store and especially in a mall. Business is changing. Every business owner is forced to make pretty difficult decisions right now. Now that the decision has been made I am looking forward to a second store. I will be working full-time in the store for the month of December. After that I will hire a manager to run it. I have not worked on the sales floor for that long in a few years. I’m not that good around that many people for such long hours. I will have to suck it up. It should be worth it.

Next week I am lecturing at U of M to human ecology students. They have a fashion and textiles faculty. I want to talk to fashion students about the industry. Maybe help students who are interested in the field avoid some of the difficulties I have faced.

I am also leaving for Hong Kong next week. I am excited for the trip. I will do a travel log as I did last time. Hopefully its not too repetitive. Writing the log helped me feel closer to home last time I was in Asia. I liked that.

Didn’t go to New York Fashion Week

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

In my last blog I said that I would do a travel log from New York. Well I didn’t make it to New York. Something came up and I could not leave town. Believe me it was a lot less fun than New York Fashion Week…

Design Inspiration

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Inspiration for designing can come from several sources as well as everyday events. Because this is my job, I look for  inspiration everywhere. By looking at what people are wearing, watching TV, listening to customers in my store, looking at fashion books and magazines in the library.

Many of the older designers have lots to offer. Madame Gres has been a big influence in my designs. Mixing details from older designs with more contemporary ones is always a good idea.

Fashion magazines are a given. I don’t find all of them that useful. Vogue for instance is really marketed to  high society. They really cater to their own, Manhattan socialites.

Gwen Stefani is a good example of this. The same outfit that Vogue loves ends up in the worst look of the week in US weekly. Most likely she is paying Vogue lots of money in advertising dollars. So of course Vogue will love her outfit. I would too.

So the gossip magazines do have a alot to offer in terms of honest fashion criticism.  However,  it gets pretty tiring looking at all that celebrity cellulite.

Some big sweetheart wrote a great article about my dress line. Whoever you are a big kiss from me to you!

Producing and Marketing a Clothing Line

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

I’ve decided that what I would like todo with this blog is write a book about my experiences with developing a product in the Orient and marketing it. Eventually turn it into a book on how to develop and market a clothing line.

My experience over the last three years has been crazy. Working with China has been really difficult and I am still wrapping my head around it.

It started three years ago when I met Mimi at the Magic show in Vegas. She owned a label manufacturing company in Toronto. She had a sister factory in China, where she manufactured clothing. We soon started working together. I visited her factory in Markham. It was really impressive. She had really good clients like Calvin Klien. I thought she would be a trustworthy resource. Turned out she was not.

Not long after I started working with her I became frustrated. Her and her partner took a really long time to develop the first samples. When I did receive the samples they looked nothing like my specs. She also rarely returned my phone calls. After I saw the first set of samples I was so disappointed and upset I jumped on a plain to China to try to correct them before the season began. There I saw the Chinese slums for the first time. I think that most people would be better off going through life without seeing this part of the world.

This is the first time I met Raymond. Mimi had hired him as her apparel agent. There were 4 people involved in this project. This was 2 too many. At this time Raymond and I started talking prices and soon released Mimi was ripping us both off. So on top of being non-responsive and late on deliveries, she was also charging me double what she should have. As well as underpaying Raymond.

Well this season turned out as you would expect. Basically I overpaid for late product that looked nothing like my designs. Half of what I ordered I did not even receive. I also did not order anything for my store from other manufacturers because I was relying on my products to sell instead. I lost so much money that season. Not to mention the battle that began between Mimi and I.

She had developed a set of my samples to sell without my consent. I took her set back with me when I left China. After this she was ready for a fight. The amount of manipulation and lying I had todo to get my product through my doors was exhausting. When I finally did receive the stock it was pretty much dead-stock. As soon as I received the inventory, I had my lawyer contact Mimi to tell her that any further contact would be considered harassment.

Mimi knew Raymond and I had decided to continue working together without her. For months after that she harassed Raymond, constantly threatening him to sue him for “stealing” me as her client. This was my first introduction to working in the Orient. From then on I knew this was not going tobe the experience I had hoped it would be. Why I did not stop then I will never know. Oddly enough, it never even occurred to me to quit.

Found New Reps for Cake

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

I have been working with my new reps for western Canada, Western Fashion Group. I think this will work out well for me. There main office is in Winnipeg and they have two other offices in Vancouver and Edmonton. I also just got a new Toronto rep. Its pretty hard to find good reps to sell your product. It has tobe a good match, one that has an existing customer base and can easily sell your line. I have been through a couple reps that did not work for me. It is pretty important to visit their showroom in person. It seems many of reps will take your line even if they don’t have the right customer base to sell it. This ends up being a big problem because your samples sit in someone else’s showroom for the season. Many apparel reps need several lines in there showroom to make a good living. Sometimes too many. A line that is new can easily be put to the side. When this happens your entire season is effected.
